Description

This is a picture book that transforms the harshness of reality into a quiet strength through poetry. It is a story about resilience, dignity and dreams. Every day, the little girl walks a long way with her siblings to the river to pan for gold - searching for the hope buried in the soil, as tiny as dust. In her eyes, every speck of gold is a star, carrying a wish: to buy a cup of corn for her family, to purchase medicine for her sick brother, to exchange for a pencil, and to return to school. Though the work is hard and the days are long, she sings all the way; though the stars are hard to find, she always holds onto hope. She tells herself: Tomorrow, my stars will rise. "The Star-Picking Child" illuminates the overlooked lives with its touching poetic and symbolic language, conveying a silent tenacity.
