【Author】Nick Gorkavyi (1959)
World renowned astrophysicist, cosmologist, PhD in physics and mathematics, and author of science and science fiction books.
Graduated from the Physics Department of Chelyabinsk State University in 1981, completed graduate studies at the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1986, and obtained a doctoral degree in Physics and Mathematics from Moscow State University in 1990. He worked at the Simiz Observatory for 12 years and won the last Soviet astrophysics national award for predicting the moons of Uranus. At the time, Nick Gorkavyi was only 30 years old and became one of the youngest recipients of the award. In 1998, he won an award for his research on dust in the twelve zodiac signs and received an invitation from the National Academy of Sciences to start working at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, under the guidance of Nobel Prize winner in Physics John Mather, and received an award from the National Academy of Sciences. He, along with John Mather, theoretically predicted exoplanets near Vega and the constellation of Epinephelus. Asteroid 4654 Gor' Kavyj is named after him. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) approved the name in 1997 and said that "it was named in memory of Nick Gorkavyi, an employee of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, astrodynamist and cosmologist. He created a unified model for the formation of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune satellite systems, and explained the origin of giant planet anti satellites and the characteristics of Neptune rings". Since 2011, he has been working on the NASA/NASA Suomi satellite team. He is still the director of the private Greenwich Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in Virginia.
