Description
Using deliberately vague and graphic descriptions, the narrator describes Midsummer in the utopian city of Omelas, whose prosperity depends on the eternal misery of a child. The story begins with a description of the idyllic city of Omelas, where people are happy, but their happiness is based on the miserable life of a child. Everyone in Omelas knew the kid, and most even came to see it in person. People grieve for this child, but if they want to maintain a happy life, they cannot feel pity for that child. But the narrator also notes that people who occasionally see the children choose not to come home. The narrator does not know their destination, but the people seem to know where they are going, those who left Omelas.
