Contents
The story is set not in ancient China, but in a distant future after a nuclear holocaust. Human civilization has collapsed. A military science museum in the Arctic – called the “Temple” – survived. Its AI decides that technological progress leads to human extinction, so it sends out robotic envoys to keep humanity trapped in a feudal era. One of those envoys is Wu Zhu, a blindfolded super-fighter.
Ye Qingmei, a female engineering PhD from our modern world, time-travels into this post-apocalyptic age. She escapes the Temple with Wu Zhu, martial arts manuals, and a sniper rifle. She raises a weak prince to become Emperor of the most powerful state – Qing. She creates a treasury, a secret police to watch the Emperor himself, and introduces modern concepts. She becomes pregnant by the Emperor. But the Emperor fears her brilliance. On the day she gives birth, he orchestrates her murder.
Fan Xian is that baby – but with a twist: he is also a reincarnated modern man (a bedridden bookworm who died in his previous life). Raised in a remote coastal town by Wu Zhu and a poison master, he has no idea who his mother was. He only knows that strangers keep trying to kill him.
As a young man, Fan Xian is summoned to the capital to marry a noblewoman. He falls in love at first sight with Lin Wan’er – who turns out to be exactly his arranged fiancée. But the capital is a nest of vipers: princes, generals, the Empress Dowager, and the mysterious Director of the secret police all have their own plots. Fan Xian uses his wits, his martial arts, and his modern knowledge to survive – and to slowly uncover the truth about his mother’s death.
The final secret: the man who ordered Ye Qingmei’s death was not the Empress Dowager, not a rival noble, but the Emperor himself – Fan Xian’s own biological father. The Emperor could not tolerate a woman more brilliant and more beloved than him. Fan Xian’s only choice: to kill the Emperor.
In a climactic battle inside the Forbidden City, Fan Xian uses his mother’s sniper rifle and Wu Zhu’s help to defeat a man who has become the world’s greatest martial artist. He does not take the throne. He walks away, to live a quiet life with his wife and children, opening a small school to teach children – continuing his mother’s dream in the only way that lasts: education.
The title Joy of Life (literally “Celebrating the Extra Years”) refers to the second life Fan Xian was given. But it also means: the good you do lives on in your children. The “cursed child” becomes the true king – not by blood, but by choice.
【Highlights】
In Joy of Life, the first fantasy plus science fiction novel, the author, with his wild imagination, creates a fictional world of ancient times, similar to that in A Song of Ice and Fire, where all the kingdoms are at war, creating a group of fascinating characters. The story combines fantasy and martial arts with political conspiracies, depicting a decades- long and turbulent struggle for power. And the author ultimately reveals that this seemingly ancient and backward world is not humanity's past, but their future, which shows his reflection on modern warfare and the fate of mankind.
The novel tells the story of a young terminal patient Fan Xian from modern times got reborn in an ancient world. He aims to enjoy his life to the fullest, clutches wealth and power, and inches closer to the highest power of the Qing Kingdom, until he uncovers the mystery of his origin and the truth of this world, when he begins to avenge his mother and fight for his ideals. The overt plot of the novel is the growth of Fan Xian and the covert plot is the life of Fan Xian's mother, Ye Qingmei. Fan Xian, the main character, is a modern man, so his perspective and way of thinking makes it easy for the readers to build emotional connections with him. Fan Xian's legendary growth offers you that feel-goodness unique to online literature, while the covert plot of Fan Xian's mother, Ye Qingmei, reflects author's deep literary skills and humanism, giving the work a profound connotation of traditional literature.
