Description
A modern mechanical engineer, Cheng Yan, wakes up inside the body of Roland Wimbledon, the fourth prince of the medieval kingdom of Graycastle. What greets him is a witch trial about to be carried out — on this continent, witches are seen as the source of calamity and are bound to the stake to be burned. Roland halts the execution and brings the hunted witches, one by one, back to his poorest frontier domain.
He soon discovers that the witches' "magic" is no miracle, but a force that can be understood and put to use: some can command blazing green fire, some can walk through mist, some can heal wounds. A bold idea is born — to use science and industry to turn these powers into cement, gunpowder, steam engines and steel, and to grow the poorest domain, step by step, into the strongest industrial kingdom on the continent.
As more witches gather, a cast of distinct personalities takes shape: the diligent Anna, the hidden Nightingale, the timid Nana, the talkative Lightning, the vengeful Echo, the brilliantly gifted Tilly... They are no longer hunted "outsiders," but the builders of a new world.
Meanwhile, every "Month of the Devil," monsters pour out of rifts in the world; every few hundred years, civilization is overturned in a "War of Divine Will." What Roland faces is not only one scheme and war after another, but a larger question: between magic and steel, can humanity find a new way to survive?
About 3.37 million characters long and 1,498 chapters, the novel unfolds in five volumes: from survival under the evil moon, to Winterless City and chemical metallurgy, to the Church's arcane sanctum, the final war and the leap of consciousness — one engineer's industrial revolution ends up rewriting the fate of an entire civilization.
