Description
At best, this is positive stress, the kind that makes us perform better under pressure, the kind that keeps us alert. But in a fast-moving, noisy world where we are all in too much of a hurry, we may not be prepared to see the dark side, the side that shows up when stress and anxiety get out of control and become pathologies.
This book teaches us to know and understand the symptoms of both disorders, as well as how to differentiate them from others - such as anxiety or panic attacks - and to see what causes stress and anxiety and how we react to them in different ways.
Each section is accompanied by practical exercises with strategies to learn how to face and manage anxiety and stress, both in children and in adolescents and adults.
No one is safe from suffering stress, anxiety or a panic attack, so it is important to establish a theoretical framework from which to analyse the characteristics of each of these disorders, their differences, the types and effects they have on our health.
characteristics of each of these disorders, their differences, the types and effects they have on our health.
In short, to learn how to identify whether one is suffering from one of these pathologies according to the symptoms, to delve into their causes and to establish strategies to calm them down.
Of course, the signs and repercussions of stress and anxiety are not the same in childhood, adolescence or adulthood, including late adulthood. Each stage of life has its own peculiarities that also require different tactics for action. For this reason, the practical exercises included at the end of the book are divided in the same way and offer resources to help reduce stress with various games, breathing techniques, visualisation and gratitude exercises, laughter therapy, mindfulness or relaxation techniques, among others, with which to prevent or deal with stress and anxiety throughout life.
Author
In the therapeutic process she uses third generation therapies, especially EDMR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and TFE (Emotion Focused Therapy). She is a specialist in trauma, OCD, addictions, mood disorders and couples.
Her work experience in psychology started working for NGOs and Social Services, although she currently offers sessions in several private clinics which are listed on her website (www.miriammartinezpsicologa.com).
Her own life experience has taught her that second chances are possible, as in order to pursue a career in psychology she gave up her degree in economics and the job market as a management secretary. She loves travelling, meeting people and uses her hobby of making enamelled jewellery as a personal mindfulness therapy.
In addition to this book, she has published Psicología positiva and Seguridad emocional del niño, also with Libsa.
