Description

The picture book Do Not Think About the Elephant! challenges the re
ader to NOT think about the trunked giant – about an ordinary elephant, or a colourful one, or a patterned one, or an elephant calf, or an elephant family... After a few pages, which are filled with drawn elephants, this naturally proves a rather difficult task.
Do Not Think About the Elephant! is an interactive picture book the whole family can play with. The basic idea stems from psychology, the so-called intrusive thoughts (these are an ironic way of control by our brain, which feverishly seeks exactly the thought we wish to suppress). This may sound complicated, but the book, which forbids us to think about the elephant on every page, though the more it does, the more we think about it, is actually quite simple. Nina Mav Hrovat’s text is short, only spanning a few sentences, but driven by a roguish tone, and the playfulness and amusingness is enhanced by characteristic shape-based humorous illustrations by Ivan Mitrevski, who has also contributed the witty text in speech bubbles. An impression of overall playfulness is also achieved by the colourfulness of the book, which can undoubtedly make it extremely difficult to get the likeable elephants out of your head. Perhaps you may succeed, with some practice...
