Feature

★The essential introduction to of one of the fathers of Western philosophy.
★Averroes is not only a fundamental link in medieval philosophical rationalism and one of its most fertile sources, but his defence of reason has led him to be considered one of the intellectual fathers of Europe.

Description

Since the Middle Ages, Averroes has been considered the commentator on Aristotle, but his figure transcends that exegetical work. A multifaceted scholar, he excelled in many fields of knowledge—philosophy, medicine, natural sciences, astronomy, and Islamic law—and his vast knowledge and attempt to harmonise philosophical reason with religious revelation made him one of the most influential intellectuals of Andalusian and universal thought.
Despite the relevance of his work, he was the subject of suspicion and controversy in both the Islamic and Christian worlds.
In 13th-century Europe, from the time his Commentaries on Aristotle began to be read, he was reviled by large sectors of the scholastic community, who considered him a threat to religious orthodoxy.
However, some thinkers, such as Siger of Brabant and Thomas Aquinas, recognised the rigour and depth of his philosophical interpretation.
