A story of the hot and brilliant youth of visually impaired skier Nam Woo-hee and guide runner Kang Ye-ri.
Through the drama My Perfect Secretary, the author received high praise for reinterpreting the value of care beyond romance. Now, she presents her first full-length novel, Downhill.
This work depicts the conflict and growth of two prodigy girls, Nam Woo-hee and Kang Ye-ri, who were once promising stars and rivals in Korean alpine skiing, as they meet again as a visually impaired athlete and a guide runner. It is a warm tribute to all the youth of this land who unfold their most dazzling downhill runs at their own pace.
At the winter sports festival in the third year of middle school, Nam Woo-hee loses her eyesight due to an unforeseen accident during the final race, just before she was about to sweep all competitions. Kang Ye-ri, due to difficult family circumstances and a severe slump, loses even her last position as an athlete. Having experienced a deep fall at their most brilliantly shining moment, the two join hands solely for the sake of skiing.
The author, praised for her delicate portrayal of character relationships in My Perfect Secretary, goes beyond a simple sports drama about overcoming disabilities and hardships in this work. She impressively shows how the two, having experienced failure and setbacks, understand each other's worlds, build solidarity, and grow together. At the end of the book, a special gift from the author to the readers is included: an exclusive interview with Nam Woo-hee and Kang Ye-ri, now twenty years old.
Description
"Ask me a hundred times, and a hundred times my answer will be skiing!"
A story of youth spending their time more fiercely than anyone else for the sport they love most, skiing.
Woo-hee, once called the future of Korean alpine skiing, loses 80% of her vision due to an unexpected accident during a competition. But her passion for skiing remains unbroken. Woo-hee becomes a para-athlete and sets out towards a new dream: becoming 'Korea's first Paralympic alpine skiing gold medalist.' However, ahead of the full season, she struggles because she can't find a 'guide runner' to be her eyes. Then, like a lie, her former rival Ye-ri appears as her new guide runner. Ye-ri, another天才 ski prodigy, has been cut even from the national team reserve squad due to a severe slump and has lost all support. She becomes Woo-hee's guide runner to continue skiing. Woo-hee refuses to give up skiing despite the doctor's warning that she could lose even her remaining vision. Ye-ri, pushed out of her athlete position, wants to race across the snow fields even as a guide runner. The story of these two young people spending their time more passionately and fiercely than anyone else to do what they love most delivers a deeply moving 감동 (emotional resonance).
"I don't enjoy skiing alone anymore. Let's go to the Paralympics together!"
The most dazzling friendship and solidarity blossoming on the snow field
The brightest point of this novel is the change in the relationship between the two protagonists and their solidarity. Once rivals, Woo-hee and Ye-ri clash over past misunderstandings and pride even after becoming destined partners. For Woo-hee, Ye-ri was a friend who never let her in, a perfect rival who was impossibly out of reach. But Ye-ri, suffering under the pressure of difficult family circumstances and the need to always come in first, was jealous of Woo-hee, who skied freely. The two, identical in their genuine heart for skiing, sweat together, fall together, and finally come to understand each other's wounds and fears. When hardship strikes again, they hold onto each other's hands and move forward together – a scene that will remain in readers' hearts for a long time. In a cold world where one must overcome everything alone, this story tells you it's okay to fall, you are not alone, just get up and run together again. This book will be the warmest comfort and support for readers this winter.
"I hope this book becomes a comfort for those resting briefly between the peaks, and the courage to set out on the road again." – From the Author's Note
A work that stands out for its realistic depiction of para-sports and vivid research
An athlete who must race down an unseen slope relying solely on the guide's voice. A guide runner who must use all their senses to become the athlete's eyes. Para-alpine skiing, where not a single step can be taken without absolute trust between the two, is itself a gripping drama. For this novel, author Ji Eun not only conducted thorough research on para-alpine skiing but also conducted interviews with active athletes and guide runners like Choi Sara and Lee Kyung-hee to complete this vivid, high-tension story. Furthermore, Kim Na-mi, Secretary General of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, who worked as a coach and guide runner after retiring from the national alpine ski team, provided supervision. Thanks to this, readers can vividly experience the somewhat unfamiliar world of para-alpine skiing and deeply understand the realistic difficulties and concerns athletes face. Particularly, the scenes where the visually impaired athlete races down the snow-covered slope relying on the guide runner's voice commands deliver heart-pounding tension alongside the miraculous moments created by their perfect teamwork.
