Review

"The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is one of the representative works of Chinese literature and is hailed as "China's epic". It has been translated and introduced overseas for more than three hundred years, with translations in Latin, English, French, German, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Vietnamese, Korean and other languages.

The Three Kingdoms IP has not only been a bestseller in the book market but has also extended to multiple fields such as games and film and television production. Games like Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Dynasty Warriors, and TV dramas like the 1994 version of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the 2010 version of Three Kingdoms have all received much acclaim.

Western scholars believe that Game of Thrones has similarities to The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in terms of power struggles and character portrayal, and some plots are even directly cited as case studies in literary research. Its historical narrative style has been widely adopted by Asian countries. Japan and South Korea have used it as a model for historical compilation and drama creation, and even Thai textbooks and temple murals have incorporated stories from the Three Kingdoms.

An 800,000-word masterpiece, it does take a considerable amount of time to savor. For those who are newly interested in it or for young readers and children, what else can we read? This series is an invaluable introductory read. It uses vivid and interesting comic forms to recreate the exciting stories of the Three Kingdoms. The series has removed the cruel and violent scenes from the original work, systematically organized and condensed the story, allowing readers to quickly get started and catch a glimpse of the war clouds, power games and heroic figures of the Three Kingdoms era.

*“Three Kingdoms” is a global mega‑franchise. Its derivative video games (such as Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors series) have sold over tens of millions of copies worldwide, and film/TV adaptations have aired on international streaming platforms. This history – an “Eastern epic power struggle” – with its complex geopolitics, alliances, and betrayals, resonates with the globally popular A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones. From the Yellow Turban Rebellion to the reunification under Jin, the Three Kingdoms story offers not only legendary heroes but also a practical classroom for strategy and wisdom, combining literary value with the development of critical thinking skills.

Description

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the world was in great turmoil and warlords rose in all directions. The Zhang Jiao brothers, with the slogan "The blue sky is dead, the yellow sky shall rise. In the year of Jiazi, the world will be prosperous," rebelled, plunging the Eastern Han Dynasty into chaos. The court sent generals such as He Jin to suppress the rebellion, but they suffered repeated defeats. At this time, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei from Zhuo County, Youzhou, sworn brothers in the Peach Garden, vowed to work together for great causes, thus beginning their journey as heroes.

At the same time, Dong Zhuo entered the capital, seized power, and persecuted loyal officials. Wang Yun and others devised a plan to use Diaochan to drive a wedge between Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu, eventually leading to Lu Bu killing Dong Zhuo. However, Dong Zhuo's remnants rose in rebellion for revenge, plunging the world into even greater chaos. Cao Cao took this opportunity to rise. As a member of the Han royal family, he "held the emperor and commanded the warlords," and in the Battle of Guandu, he achieved a great victory with fewer troops over Yuan Shao, unifying the north.
