Author

Cao Xueqin

Born in Nanjing, with ancestral roots in Liaoyang. My ancestors were originally Han military officers stationed in Liaodong. In 1621, they surrendered to the Later Jin Dynasty and joined the Manchu Zhengbai Banner. My great grandmother, Sun Shi, was the childhood nanny of Emperor Kangxi. Grandfather Cao Yin was the attendant and imperial guard of Emperor Kangxi, and later served as the weaver of Jiangning and concurrently as the salt inspector of the two Huai regions.
Cao Xueqin is good at poetry and painting, drinking, and talking. His eloquence makes him tireless all day long. His life is poor and he is also addicted to drinking, so that "the whole family often eats Congee and wine on credit". In the 27th year of the Qianlong reign (1762), Cao Xueqin, who was saddened by the premature death of her beloved son and suffering from poverty and illness, passed away.
