Foreword

When Xiao Qi was 14 years old, she experienced her first period. She was shocked and ashamed, and the bloody scene was witnessed by her father.
A rope hung from the beam, the other end tied around her waist. She dangled like a suspended zongzi, her head drooping, arms twisted behind her back. She didn’t feel much pain—her legs had already gone numb. She struggled to lift her head, peering through her messy hair. She knew her father couldn’t stand the sight of her like this, and sure enough, he yanked the rope fiercely, shouting, “I’m asking you, why aren’t you crying?!”
Her spine felt as if it were on fire, and her back was drenched in sweat.
“Only a bastard would cry. Only a bastard would give you what you want.” She retorted with the same ferocity, though her strength was failing, her teeth clenched audibly.
“I must have done something evil to have given birth to a cursed child like you! You should’ve drowned at birth, wasted over a decade of my rice, and now you’ve ruined my son! Why aren’t you dead yet?”
Sweat blurred her vision, and she suddenly spat out, “Why aren’t you dead?! My mom’s still pregnant, my brother’s dying from illness, and you don’t care. All you care about is that bastard child of yours with that other woman? He deserved to die!”
She had thrown everything into those words, and immediately, her vision went dark. She knew there was no escape this time—her father would surely beat her to death. Sure enough, Luo Yuliang froze. His thick eyebrows gradually arched into an inverted “八” shape. He swallowed hard and tightened the rope with both hands.
“Well said. Today, you’ve brought this on yourself. If I kill you, I’ll even have to waste a mat on you.”
Xiao Qi’s body had long gone numb. She felt herself being pulled and swayed by some force, her mind blank. In the distance, she heard the sound of the gate being pushed open—once, twice. Hazily, she thought, Mom’s here.
Her head hung low, and she opened her swollen eyes, only to see a thick drop of liquid fall. It landed on her father’s shoe and vanished instantly. Then came another drop, a soft “plop,” as a bundle of straw meant for the stove silently absorbed it.
As if searching for a stray gust of wind or a rat that had suddenly scurried under the stove, Luo Yuliang looked around, his gaze finally settling on Xiao Qi. It seemed he had only just noticed—his 14-year-old daughter was hanging in the air, her hips and thighs exposed to the light from the door. At that strange junction, a red stain was slowly spreading, heavy and deliberate, as if it had been gathering for a long time.
Luo Yuliang frowned, tilted his head, and pondered, until the pregnant woman rushed forward to snatch the rope from his hands. With a wave, he easily shoved her aside. Then he spat, took off his shoe, and stuffed it into the stove.
“Bad luck,” he cursed, slamming the door as he left.
