Description

In 1959, a new type of worker started a test shift at the General Motors automobile factory in New Jersey. This was the first factory robot prototype, called Unimate. Unimate was a huge and heavy machine that completed tasks that were difficult for people to do, including removing and stacking very hot metal disks. For a while the automobile industry was the only industry to use robots in its factories. However, since that time, industrial robots have become far more complicated and capable, and they are a feature in most major factories in the world.
