Description

Winter things known to us: a hat, sledges, Christmas tree, skis and skates, tell unexpected stories. Do you know that the oldest skates are three thousand years old, and where have archeologists found them? The book talks about concepts and names: a Dallia fish freezing in the ice for the winter, the mythical people of Hyperborea, the Scandinavian myth of the end of the world, Ragnarok, the Japanese ritual of admiring the snow...

The main idea here is to show winter through various viewpoints: a biologist's, a physicist's, a mathematician's, a historian's and a geographer's. It is a collection of the most interesting and unusual facts, exciting stories, myths and legends about winter, arranged in alphabetical order. The book creates a special magical atmosphere with its vivid and colorful illustrations. All that we love in winter and everything that strikes our imagination, from secrets of nature and dangerous adventures of the past, to scientific discoveries and fairy tales – is collected here in one snowy volume.

You will meet familiar and unfamiliar names: Julius Caesar, who established the beginning of the year on January 1, polar explorers Amundsen, Scott, Nobile, John Franklin, the conqueror of Siberia Ermak... Curious facts collected under one cover cannot be counted. Have polar bears been hunting penguins? Why do toad antifreeze? Did the North Star always indicate the direction to the North, and what star will our descendants be oriented in after 2000 years?
