Description

Everyone knows the tale of the clever cat who turned a poor miller’s son into a nobleman. But in this original reinterpretation by acclaimed children’s author Beniamino Sidoti, the young man is none other than Vincent van Gogh — and the gifts sent to the king are his paintings.
Blending fairy tale and biography, fiction and art history, this picture book transforms one of the most beloved classic stories into a celebration of creativity, identity, and the power of vision.

Once upon a time, a miller leaves his inheritance to his three sons. One receives the mill, another the money — and Vincent, the eldest, receives imagination… and a cat.
But this is no ordinary cat. Wearing tiny boots and speaking wiser words than any human, he persuades Vincent to sign his paintings as the mysterious “Marquis of Carabas” and to send them as gifts to the king. The king, astonished by the beauty of the artworks — blazing skies, golden fields, swirling stars — longs to meet their creator.
As in the classic fairy tale, the cat stages encounters and orchestrates illusions. Yet here, nothing is stolen: what Vincent gives to the world is his gaze — a way of seeing flames in flowers, stars in wheat fields, sunlight in love.
When Vincent hesitates, fearing he is living inside a lie, the cat reminds him: he has not deceived anyone — he has offered people the wonder they were waiting for.
In the end, the fairy tale and the artist’s destiny merge in a warm, luminous conclusion where art becomes truth.
