Description

When did humans first begin to count the objects around them? Why did they start observing the stars and developing calendars? What need gave rise to fractions and the concept of a circle’s circumference? Who conceived the idea of extracting square roots, and who was the first to calculate instantaneous velocity? And who, when, and why began to study mathematics in the first place? This book tells the history of this discipline in an engaging and delightfully entertaining manner—tracing its evolution from the invention of numbers to the emergence of imaginary numbers; from the construction of right triangles to the curved spaces of Lobachevsky and Riemann; and from star-gazing to the groundbreaking discoveries of Newton and Einstein. All of these milestones are presented as humorous, often whimsical, and sometimes downright baffling tales, in which mathematicians from different eras and cultures debate, conduct experiments, exchange jests, and even enjoy picnics together. From Egypt to China, from India to Greece, the history of mathematics spans continents and stretches over millennia.
