In theory, a network of adult guardians was meant to care for the little girl, but reality told a very different story: parties in the kitchen, drug deals in the living room, and chaotic political activity at every turn. The adults gathered to debate politics and plot revolution; marijuana was sold right there in the common room; her father changed girlfriends every week. Lale could stay up until midnight, drink as much lemonade as she wanted, and watch as much television as she pleased… Yet she longed for genuine connection and clear boundaries—while her own limits were constantly violated. Lale forged an indomitable will to survive, struggling her way out of a teenage years mired in addiction and toxic relationships. In the end, she became the heroine of her own story. Amid this turbulent, peril‑filled world, Lale had no one to rely on but herself. She had to fight for her path as a woman, as an artist, and as a mother—a yearning for a better life that would never be quenched.

Lilli Tollkien
Born in Berlin in 1980, Lilli Tollkien has participated in various training programs and studied directing and music therapy in Berlin and Heidelberg. She has held a range of professions, including substance-abuse counselor in prisons, career counselor, and stage designer. In addition to her current work, she is also a photographer whose images have been featured in several photo collections. She lives in Leipzig with her children. This book is her first novel.
