Review

"A signature work of 'game realism'--it uses the logic of gaming to mirror our present reality."
-- Shao Yanjun, Peking University professor & critic

"Fusing the apocalyptic wasteland aura of Westworld with Kafkaesque absurdity, it is a masterpiece of 'allegorical realism'."
-- Zhou Zhiqiang, cultural critic

Description

When the earthquake hits, Qi Xia wakes—not in rubble, but in a spotless sealed room. Nine other strangers join him: a lawyer, a kindergarten teacher, a cop, a doctor… all “rescued” from the same disaster, yet each haunted by contradictory memories of it.

The room is their first brutal puzzle. After cooperation pries open its layered locks, freedom proves an illusion: they step into a bigger cage—a ruined, ghost city where the twelve animals of the Zodiac sit as judges and host death-games ranked Human, Earth, or Heaven. Solve puzzles, earn “Dao” points. Gather 3,600 Dao within ten days and you may leave.

The cruellest clause: when Day 10 ends, time rewinds. Memories wipe—except for Qi Xia. For reasons even he cannot explain, shards of every loop cling to him. He alone carries history inside an endless reset.

Again and again he must lead freshly “respawned” teammates—liars, saints, killers, saints-turned-killers—through ever-escalating games while fending off rival players, internal betrayal, and the Judges’ shifting rulebook. Some die; others awaken supernatural gifts. And Qi Xia begins to sense that this absurd “Land of Endings” is wired to the past he lost and to the poet’s guilt that gnaws at him.

What begins as a sprint for survival becomes an expedition to decrypt the world’s operating code—and, finally, to rewrite the rules themselves.

When the enemy writes every law, how do you draft your own fate?

Author

Sha Chong Dui Dui Yuan (Pen name: Pest Control Team Member)

A high-profile writer of suspense and fantasy in China. His pen name--literally "Pest Control Team Member"--hints at a singular vantage point: that of an exterminator purging the world's "pests".

His work is rooted in China's thriving web-fiction industry, famed for its vast readership, highly interactive creative process and rapid-fire innovation. The author excels at forging fresh, sweeping worldviews, engineering plotlines that twist back on themselves in multiple layers, and sculpting characters who breathe.

Professor Shao Yanjun of Peking University's Chinese Department--an authority on Chinese web literature--has spotlighted his fiction, describing it as "game realism" achieved through "database writing" that weaves video-game logic and pop-culture tropes into narratives alive with social concern.

The quintessential expression of this vision is his magnum opus "Reincarnation Gamble: The Infinite Ten-Day Escape", which marries high-concept premises to probing explorations of human nature. The novel has garnered a string of accolades: the 2024 "Annual Best Web-Novel" by the China Fiction Society, the 2024 Blade Book Award for "Web-Literature of the Year", a place on the 2024 "China Web-Fiction Influence List", the Grand Prize of the inaugural Beijing Web-Fiction Contest, and "Original Literary IP of the Year" at Weibo Culture Night.
