Description

In an impenetrable fog, a driverless bus carries the protagonist Ning Qiushui and six others to a mysterious black villa called “Guishe”. “Guishe” serves as a hub linking multiple parallel alternate dimensions (its concept akin to the “haunted house trial grounds” in Western horror tales), and on its third floor are nine blood gates—gateways to different terrifying dungeons.
Ning Qiushui and his companions, as “chosen participants”, are forced to enter these “blood gates” at regular intervals to complete various horrific and bizarre tasks in order to survive. These mission settings are diverse, including but not limited to: “Praying Rain Village”, steeped in ancient curses; an “Old Mansion” plagued by a series of inexplicable deaths; a haunted house dominated by the eerie portrait of the “Lady in Black”; and a modern apartment where one must engage in psychological warfare with a supernatural entity known as “The Man Who Looks Up”.
Each “blood gate” world resembles an independent lethal game dungeon, with unique rules and deadly puzzles. Participants must rely on wit, courage, and limited cooperation to survive these supernatural dangers within a set time; failure in the missions often means death.
Through repeated brushes with death, Ning Qiushui and his companions gradually uncover that the truth behind “Guishe” and the “blood gates” is far more complex and astonishing than the surface curses suggest: the so-called “ghosts” are physical manifestations of tainted human desires and obsessions; the blood gate trials are in fact a selection process for saviors of the world, concealing an even larger plan to end the contamination. Meanwhile, the fallen organization “Rashomon” seeks to spread the contamination into the human world. While collecting “ghost tools” (special items used to combat ghosts) and puzzle clues earned as game rewards, Ning Qiushui contends with hostile forces, gradually unveiling the truth connecting the mist-shrouded world with the human world, and ultimately taking on the mission to save the world.
Throughout the tale, set against an atmosphere of intense suspense and horror, the story delves deeply into human nature under extreme conditions, the value and cost of trust, and the struggle between individual will and fate.
