Review

“For all lovers of literature—and for those who aspire to become them—this is an unusual and highly entertaining read.” Damian Robota — Frankfurter Neue Presse

“The way these writers are portrayed at pivotal moments in their lives [...] is immensely entertaining, amusing, even comical; at times frightening, at others thought-provoking; erudite, almost dazzling, and at times downright brilliant.” Ruthard Stäblein

“What a delightful work!” Alexandra Turner — Der Materialist

“There could be no more enjoyable way to experience literary history; a highly recommended read.” Albert C. Eibl — Die Presse

“A splendid work worth reading again and again” — Frankfurter Neue Presse

“It’s thoroughly engaging to read.” Thomas Strässle — SRF 1 - Literaturclub

“This book makes what was once hidden accessible in an entertaining and illuminating manner. [...] A story about stories—highly entertaining!” Dr. Matthias Eichardt — Stadtmagazin 07

“A splendid collection of curious and humorous episodes from the lives of famous authors—including tragedies, strange encounters, and accidents worthy of a Nobel Prize.” — Freundin

“Here, literature truly meets life.” — Lübecker Nachrichten

“We love it because it’s so much fun!” Thomas Wörtche — CulturMag

“An infectious adventure!” Wolf Ebersberger — Nürnberger Nachrichten

“Can literary history be told through such special moments? The author has succeeded in doing just that in an engaging way; once you begin turning the pages, you’ll find yourself unable to put the book down. As a teenager, Susan Sontag simply rang the doorbell of Thomas Mann’s villa in Pacific Palisades, California, and discussed The Magic Mountain. Decades later, shortly before her death, she accepted the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in Frankfurt and, in her acceptance speech, declared that The Magic Mountain was the most important book of her life.”
— DIE ZEIT

One cannot help but ask: What is the point of a collection of literary works—or of literary history itself? The answer is not easily settled; nor can mere stimulation of interest suffice to explain it. Yet in this very book, these richly detailed episodes demonstrate that literary history often emerges from small, yet profoundly effective acts. Such acts do not arise solely from national carnage, bloodthirsty wars, or rigged election results, nor are they intended to spark earth-shattering events, usher in new eras, accelerate paradigm shifts, or create world literature. Rather, they spring from the subtle gestures within the texts, the reassuring smiles, the intimate exchanges between people...

Description

A Literary History Unlike Any Other: Tolstoy, Proust, Shelley… and More Are in Action!
They say a writer’s life is but paper—monotonous and pale. This book proves the opposite. It presents the authors of world literature in ways we have never seen before: at the heart of the action, in close‑quarters combat and chaos, as both villains and heroes. Here, these literary giants reveal themselves as we’ve never known them—on the battlefield, in hand‑to‑hand clashes, amid the throng, as rogues and as champions. We witness Cervantes fighting at the Battle of Lepanto; Tolstoy being mauled by a bear; Jules Verne riding a roller coaster; Antoine de Saint‑Exupéry surviving four emergency landings; the Brontë sisters braving the end of the world; Marcel Proust dueling; the police searching for Agatha Christie; Mary Shelley encountering her monster on Lake Geneva; Emily Dickinson weathering a storm of love; Bob Dylan breaking his neck at Woodstock; and David Foster Wallace crashing to the floor in a gymnasium.
