• An exciting and effective way of examining our relationship with images and truth: AI/new technologies put to the test in terms of ethical, philosophical and societal issues.
• Written by an expert and media-savvy author, editor-in-chief of the digital section of Sciences et Avenir and widely recognised by the media on these subjects

Description

How should we respond to the deepfake threat?
We all remember the images of Macron in a yellow vest, Pope Francis in a puffer jacket, or former President Obama calling Trump a "complete idiot" on camera. Altering a sound or video file, or even creating one from scratch by hijacking the image or voice of a public figure, is no longer science fiction. With deepfakes, the culture of fakery is everywhere, and they are true weapons of disinformation. In a world where we are constantly confronted with images, how can we protect ourselves? Have we entered an era where we can no longer believe what we see? Scientists are already working on digital tools that will one day make it possible to tell whether a video is real or fake. But they can't do it alone: legislators on the one hand, and digital platforms and GAFAMs on the other, have their part to play in ensuring that we can continue to know what "real" means.
