Feature

★Saving the world with empathy for insects!
★Exciting and informative stories from the diverse world of insects.
★A manifesto for the preservation of biodiversity, written by an entomologist.

Description

We mostly only notice insects when they bother us: the wasp that disputes our juice or the mosquito that robs us of sleep. But in reality, insects are much more than that: They are the rulers of the largest and most diverse realm of our planet. It is the realm of superlatives, where life is possible under extreme conditions, whose inhabitants are endowed with seemingly supernatural perceptions and which has developed over enormous spans of time. Dominique Zimmermann takes us on a fantastic journey through this world, which is populated by leafcutter bees, compass termites, jewel wasps, and many other insects. She shows the vital tasks they fulfil and how crucial they are for our ecosystem.

This book is a declaration of love to all six-legged creatures and a manifesto to perceive insects as living beings, to protect their habitats and to preserve the planet's biodiversity as much as possible. There is only one world for all living beings: Let's preserve it!

Author

Dominique Zimmermann, born in 1981 in Vienna, is an entomologist and curator at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Her research focuses on wild bees and other Hymenoptera, particularly the decline in species and its causes. Additionally, she teaches at the University of Vienna. Zimmermann is a co-author of the Insect Manifesto, which as part of the artwork "Walk of Insects" by the Austrian artist Edgar Honetschläger has been immortalized since 2023 in 13 ground plates in front of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. Science communication is of particular importance to her, which she pursues, among other things, as a board member of the association GoBugsGo.
