Description
Never in its history has the West seemed so criticized. Virtually every misfortune in the world is blamed on it. Non-Westerners blame it for the humiliation it has inflicted on them through centuries of colonization. But the West is also challenged at home by its own people. It is accused of having secured undue privileges for the white heterosexual male, to the detriment of the oppressed - women, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, black people, etc. - and of having wrecked the planet to ensure its own prosperity. Yet the West continues to fascinate the very people who challenge it. The direction of immigration flows is proof of this: it's not Westerners who flee their countries at the risk of their own lives, even when they disagree with their rulers. Over the last four centuries, the West has always been at the cutting edge, in politics, morality, aesthetics, science, technology, philosophy and so on. The worldwide benefits of its development justify, in its eyes, its messianic universalism. However, the list is long of those who refuse to blindly follow the "universal" values of the West.
But what precisely do they blame it for?
