Description

The Roman Empire never fell. All the empires of history presented themselves as its legitimate heirs: the Eastern Roman Empire; the Holy Roman Empire of Charlemagne; Moscow, that called itself “the third Rome”. And then Napoleon, and the British Empire. Even Fascism and Nazism proclaimed their Roman ancestry. But the political entity that probably has the most striking similarities with the Roman Empire are the United States of America. And nowadays we participate of the virtual empire of Mark Zuckerberg, himself a big admirer of Augustus: the first man to lead a multi-ethnic society of peoples, who didn’t know each other but shared the same culture.

Rome lives. All over the world many political words come from Latin. The terms “Kaiser” and “Czar” derive from the name “Caesar”. The Romans inspired poets and artists throughout the ages. They dictated the rules of war, of architecture, of law, all of which are still relevant today. They went through the same issues as our present society, such as racism and integration, freedom from slavery,
and citizenship: one could become Roman no matter the skin colour, nor the gods he prayed, not even the place he came from.

Rome: the neverending Empire starts with the legendary foundation of Rome, from the myth of Aeneas to that of Romulus and far on. We read of the Republican age, with its heroes and heroines willing to die for the country. Of the adventures of Catiline and Spartacus. Of the extraordinary story of Julius Caesar, Octavian Augustus and then Constantine, who is the reason why the West is Christian.
