Review
‘The fact that Lochner’s stories, including old women with magical powers or personified animal characters or objects among others, are still popular years later, may be due to the notion of oral retellings and the fact that it is more about events and archetypal characters than
specific context, as with the stories of Grimm, Andersen and Perrault.’

Feature
Described as ‘South Africa’s own Hans Christian Andersen’, Helena Lochner (1982 – 1951) was a beloved author who wrote more than 65 books. This collection of her best-known stories remains evergreen.
Description
Although reminiscent of tales by Andersen and the Grimm brothers, Lochner s work has a unique African flavour. Her stories are filled with eccentric old ladies, mighty kings, wild animals and magical creatures but never with fairies. Because, as she remarked herself, dainty fairies would never have been able to survive on the scorched plains of the African continent. This lovely edition features illustrations by Toby Newsome and is sure to enchant young readers.
