Description
With its splendid colour illustrations, the book takes the reader on a journey through the fantastic universe of the religious imagery of India with particular attention to the iconography of modern votive illustration starting from the first chromolithographs at the end of the last century.
A review of the many facets of Hindu mythology serves to illustrate the representations of the divinities in the Hindu pantheon, the ancient mythical tales of the Puranas and events related in such sacred epics such as Ramãyana and Mahãbhãrata. Modern India draws inspiration from her centuries old iconographic tradition to create a new vision of contemporary social and cultural scenery.
New printing techniques such as chromolithography have produced a major transformation of devotional iconography; they have affected taste and style as well as narrative and mythical content, but have above all influenced behaviour in the world of religion.
