Review

“What happens if you cross Monty Python’s Flying Circus with Godfrey Hardy’s ‘A Mathematician’s Apology’ against a logical background à la Lewis Carroll? Precisely: this wonderful book. It is the perfect medicine to transform mathophobia into mathophilia.”
—— Jean Paul Van Bendegem, mathematician & philosopher of science

“In an unbridled style, David Eelbode shows that mathematics can be just as much a source of fun and amazement as sports or superhero movies.”
—— Lieven Scheire, science communicator & comedian

Description

Math doesn’t have to be boring. Quite the contrary, in fact: math can be incredibly funny, as this book by David Eelbode will prove to you. Eelbode takes you on a fascinating trip through the mathematical concept of ‘space’ and shares personal anecdotes, clever observations and absurd logic. In order to make the more challenging parts easily digestible, he has added a simple but effective ingredient: humour.

While reading this book, you not only learn about mathematics, but also about the enigmatic world of the people who have been shaping this structure for centuries. In addition, David Eelbode spices up his story with original metaphors that grab your attention and give you food for thought.

Author

David Eelbode studied mathematics in Ghent and became a professor at the University of Antwerp in 2008. When he is not busy doing research in pure maths, he is trying hard to lure innocent students into the loving arms of the Queen of the Sciences. Quite successfully, it seems, as he has already won the prize for ‘Best Professor at the Faculty of Sciences’ several times.
