Description

The relationships between mathematics and literary texts are ancient, well-established and present over time.
From ancient literatures (with Eratosthenes of Cyrene, for the Greek sphere, and Catullus, for the Latin sphere) to Italian literature (with particular reference to Dante, Petrarch, Galilei, Leopardi, Pirandello, Calvino, Rodari and Sinisgalli), to foreign literatures, with Storm (for the German one) and Wilkins Freeman and Poe (for the American one), a multiplicity of perspectives and a variety of relationships between mathematics and literary texts emerge, offering interesting insights and directions for teaching practice.
The volume brings together twelve contributions that address the relationship between mathematics and literature and arise from the experience of the lectures given as part of the Liceo matematico project coordinated by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Salerno, with the collaboration of the Department of Humanities.
