Description

THE RICHNESS OF ARAB CULTURE BROUGHT TO BRAZIL
The immigrants who arrived in Brazil brought in their suitcase more than clothes and homesickness.
They brought much of the culture from their country. By establishing themselves here, they taught us about their customs and habits and helped us understand and respect their traditions.
In this book, Yasmin tells how she learned the history of the Arab people from her grandfather.
In the conversations, Jido explains why he came to Brazil, how he adapted to a new country and how he managed to maintain the customs and the Arab tradition. In this exciting story, grandfather and granddaughter show how important family relationship is to preserve cultural roots throughout generations.

FROM THE BOOK
“In some Arab countries, like Lebanon, there was no way a person could have a passport issued, so to come to Brazil, many immigrants had to travel to Turkey to get one. When they arrived here, they were identified as Turks. For a long time there was this confusion. Jido had a Syrian passport and was not happy to be called a Turk: he replied with words he never told me the meaning of. The only one I understood was “Carcamano”, which he shouted at the end of a sentence. The two fought, but deep down they liked each other very much. As immigrants, their stories were very similar.”
