Feature

★ A Peking University graduate who works a day job and draws at night, Li Xia records her daily life as a mainlandin Hong Kong. Published on Rednote, a Chinese social platform, as the "Li Zhi Xiao Dui" comics series, her work has over 2 million reads.

★ First collected in book form, the series centres on five endearing little animals -- Caramel the Cat, Cookie the Bear, Cabbage the Rabbit, Bean Mash the Dog and Sesame the Mouse -- and is told from Caramel the Cat's point of view.

★ Three parts -- Work, Commuting and Daily Life -- cover cross-boundary commuting, the pressure of renting and living alone, and language and cultural differences: the real situations ordinary people meet when they come to the city.

★ More than a documentary-style healing comic, it carries a full set of practical guides -- taking the bus, cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style diner) vocabulary, handling bank cheques -- for the first-step difficulties of working in Hong Kong or staying there for a short period.

Description

At 27, I came to Hong Kong, China. Summer in this city settles gently at 27 degrees.

Wrapped in the sea breeze off Victoria Harbour, drowsy in the crowds on the East Rail Line, I have eaten a pineapple bun with butter at a cha chaan teng, received my first cheque, and found, here, a small corner of my own.
