Review

"Fu Ying, Liu Xiaoming's predecessor as China's ambassador to Britain, wrote frequently in the British press and appeared on British television, putting across China's message in a confident, personal style—and to good effect. Some in British political and business circles even said they wished every Chinese diplomat were like Fu Ying."
——BBC Chinese (on her tenure as Ambassador to the UK, January 2014)

The book offers readers a guide to understanding "profound changes unseen in a century," building three perspectives: how we see the world, how the world sees us, and how to reflect, from a third-party vantage point, on "the mutual perceptions of the world and China."
——Xue Lan (Dean of Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University)

The book shows the experiences and toil of a former diplomat and raises important questions readers need to understand; it is "a textbook that helps everyone see the world as it is."
——Peng Kaiping (Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University)

Feature

★ Seeing China's place in the world, and the world's view of China. The sequel to Seeing the World 1, collecting Fu Ying's articles and interviews published from 2017 to 2020, plus two lectures on the international landscape and international communication.

★ Challenges ahead—but what choices to make? The book reads the world through three dimensions—the international landscape, globalization and technological change—and through three perspectives: how we see the world, how the world sees us, and how each side perceives the other, answering the questions the international community asks about China.
★ The book examines the pandemic's impact on the international situation and the evolution of China-US relations, analyzes how artificial intelligence is reshaping economies, militaries and the global order, and records the author's live exchanges with world leaders and scholars at the Munich Security Conference and beyond.
★ Professor Peng Kaiping of Tsinghua University calls the book "a textbook that helps readers see the world as it is."

Description

Seeing the World 2 is a collection of essays by Ambassador Fu Ying and the sequel to Seeing the World 1 (2018), bringing together her articles and interviews published between 2017 and 2020, along with two lectures on the international landscape and international communication. The book is organized into eight themes—changes in the international landscape, globalization and China's role, international relations, and more—and proposes three dimensions for observing the world: shifts in the international order, the evolution of globalization, and technological change. Through the author's dialogue practice with statesmen and scholars, it shows a habit of open, probing debate and the depth of thought that Chinese scholars bring to the world order.

The book examines the impact of COVID-19 on the international situation and the evolution of China-US relations, and analyzes the profound changes that artificial intelligence is bringing to economies, militaries and the international order, offering varied insights for readers seeking to understand the transformation of global governance. Xue Lan, a scholar at Tsinghua University, notes that the book builds three perspectives—how we see the world, how the world sees China, and how to reflect on mutual perceptions—presenting systematically the logic of dialogue between China and the world.

As the sequel to Seeing the World 1, the book draws on the author's seasoned diplomatic experience—recognized with honors such as "Asian Diplomat of the Year"—to parse global hot topics and governance changes amid profound changes unseen in a century, combining practical cases with deep reflection; it is a quality read for understanding the logic of China's diplomacy and its participation in global governance. The English edition of Seeing the World 2, faithful to the intellectual depth of the original, was reviewed jointly by senior scholars of international relations and translation experts, ensuring rigor of academic expression and fluency across cultures, and offering English readers an authoritative window into China's strategic thinking and dialogue in responding to the challenges of our time.
