Description

Alexei Resheton is Russia’s most well-known forensic expert, a profession that places him in a position inaccessible to most people: every day, he confronts the “consequences” of parental irresponsibility and youthful arrogance—what nicotine, alcohol, drugs, and disregard for safety rules ultimately lead to. He is not spinning sensational tales; rather, through a wealth of real-life cases, he reveals a stark truth: the vast majority of unnatural deaths are entirely preventable.
This is a sober, rigorous, yet candid professional work that examines how people shorten their lives by becoming addicted to nicotine, alcohol, and drugs, or by failing to observe basic safety rules, among other things. What makes this book particularly incisive is its critique of a “superstition” even more dangerous than viruses: the belief in chance. Resheton points out that deep down, many people believe “bad things won’t happen to me”—and it is precisely this侥幸心理 that leaves them heedless when drinking, using drugs, or ignoring safety protocols. The consequences, however, never stop with the individual; each act of recklessness drags those around them into danger. It is this faith in chance—the conviction that it will spare you—that is more terrifying than any epidemic, for it endangers not only your own life but also the lives of everyone around you. In just five chapters, the book dispels myths, presents case studies, imparts medical knowledge, and offers a wealth of common sense.
This is not a book meant to frighten, but one meant to awaken. Resheton advocates a responsible and rational approach to life: facing risks head-on—not to live in constant fear, but to wrest control of our fate from the hands of luck. This book is dedicated to all who care about their own health, as well as that of their children and families. It does not promise to change your life, but it can at least prompt you to pause and thoughtfully reflect on your choices—and for many, that may be a step they have long neglected.
