Description

That thinking is important is self-evident. The ability to generate unprecedented creative ideas, and the optimism to discover opportunities even in life’s adversities, all stem from thought. How one sees oneself and how one sees the world can dramatically alter the trajectory of one’s life. Everyone knows this in theory, but how many truly understand the value of thinking—and consistently take the time to think deeply and live thoughtfully?

Cho Hun-hyun, 9-dan, now in his 61st year of professional play, fully shares the power of thought and his unique way of thinking honed over a lifetime on the Go board. In the game of Go, victory or defeat is determined entirely by thought. He has competed in countless matches, and the number of his victories far surpasses that of anyone else.

Cho Hun-hyun holds unprecedented records, including the most career wins in history (1,953 wins) and the most tournament championships globally (160 titles). He is, without question, a master of thought. In this book, for the first time, he looks back on his entire life and recounts his unique principles of thinking.

The focus and persistence to find a breakthrough even in adversity; the resilience to rise from life’s lows and reach a second peak; the discipline to resist immediate temptations and protect long-term value… His thinking has continued to exert its power across different stages of his life. For this reason, he firmly asserts: “Once you establish your own way of thinking, you will never lose in any contest in life.”

This special edition is published to commemorate the book reaching over 100,000 readers. In response to the era-defining shift of artificial intelligence repeatedly defeating top Go players, it includes a new preface and afterword, featuring Cho Hun-hyun‘s hard-won reflections and insights from his 60th anniversary as a professional player. It also updates information that has changed since the first edition, delivering Cho Hun-hyun’s wisdom more completely and accurately. You will come to understand: truly valuable thinking can transcend time and circumstance, affecting an entire lifetime.

Author

Cho Hun-hyun

An irreplaceable legendary Go player and the ultimate competitor of his era. He holds the unprecedented records of the most career wins in history (1,953 wins) and the most tournament championships globally (160 titles).

In 1989, at the Ing Cup Go Olympics—which gathered the top players from China, Japan, and South Korea—he defeated a succession of world-class players to win the tournament‘s inaugural championship. This achievement single-handedly elevated Korean Go, which had until then been considered a peripheral player, to the pinnacle of the sport, earning him the title “Emperor of Go.”

He created the most brilliant achievements in the history of Korean and world Go. Among his disciples is Lee Chang-ho and other renowned players who have followed in his footsteps.
