Description
The Harem has never been just about cute everyday moments; it is a space where a group of cats and a group of people live together, grow older together, and face challenges side by side. It is our hope that through this book, readers will gain a deeper understanding of what the Harem cats are really like, and come to appreciate those inevitable yet most precious lessons that both humans and cats must learn throughout their lives.
After a two-year wait, this new photo-and-text book documents the transformations that have taken place over the past two years: moving to a new home, an emergency trip to the vet for Trifoot, and the gradual transition of our senior cats into long-term care. Emperor Huang, Trifoot, and Lulu will all turn 19 this year, while the four little tigers who first joined the Harem are now seven years old. Their aging has become visibly apparent…

This book also shares the MBTI types of eight cats. While this personality classification is often applied to humans, we can observe similar individual differences among cats as well.
[A Word from the Li Mao]
The title of this book, “What Happiness Looks Like,” came to me after I deeply reflected on the rapid physical decline my cats have experienced over the past two years. Someone once told me, “Everyone is always striving for a better future.” Some chase money, others pursue fame and status, and still others devote themselves to raising their children. So what am I pursuing? I simply want my cats to stay healthy. However, so many events over these past two years have made me realize that one day they will inevitably leave me—and that feeling has been growing stronger. Yet rather than being consumed by worry, I’ve chosen to mentally prepare myself for it. After all, aren’t we still together right now? Isn’t this steady, ordinary life precisely what happiness looks like? That’s why I tell myself not to keep searching for anything else—this moment is enough. I also hope that every reader can discover their own “happiness” in life and savor it with contentment!
[A Word from Zhi Ming]
Compared with my previous works, the content of this book is indeed much heavier. There are far more medical records, unexpected incidents, and signs of decline, along with increased anxiety and concern. At the same time, these records make the realities of cat ownership clearer and more authentic. The Harem has never been merely a collection of adorable daily scenes; it is a space where a group of cats and a group of people live together, age together, and confront life’s challenges together.
It is our hope that through this book, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the true nature of the Harem cats and come to appreciate those unavoidable yet most cherished lessons that both humans and cats must learn throughout their lives.

Both I and my imperial harem hail from Taiwan.
