Description
After a two-year hiatus, this new photo-and-text book documents the transformations of the past two years: moving homes, Three-Legs being rushed to the emergency room, and our senior cats gradually transitioning into long-term care. Amma, Three-Legs, and Lulu will all turn 19 this year, while the four little tigers who first entered the harem are now seven. It’s striking how visibly they’ve aged…
The Harem has never been just about cute everyday moments; it is a space where a group of cats and a group of people live together, grow old together, and face life’s challenges side by side. Through this book, I hope readers can gain a deeper understanding of what the Harem cats are really like and come to appreciate those inevitable, yet most precious, lessons that both humans and cats must learn along the way.
In this book, we share the MBTI types of eight cats. This personality classification isn’t limited to humans—similar individual differences can be observed among cats as well.
[From the Tanuki Cat]
The title of this book, “What Happiness Looks Like,” came from a profound realization I had after witnessing my cats’ rapid physical decline over the past two years. Someone once told me, “Everyone is always striving for a better future.” Some chase money, others seek fame and status, and still others devote themselves to raising their children. So what am I pursuing? I simply want my cats to stay healthy. Yet, through everything that has happened these past two years, I’ve come to understand that one day they will leave me—and that feeling grows stronger with each passing day. Rather than dwelling on worry, though, I’ve chosen to mentally prepare myself. After all, aren’t we still here together right now? Isn’t this steady, ordinary life exactly what happiness looks like? So I’ve decided to stop chasing anything else; right now is enough. I also hope that every reader can discover their own “happiness” and savor it with contentment!
[From Zhi-Ming]
Compared with my previous works, the tone of this book is indeed much heavier. There are far more medical records, unexpected incidents, and signs of decline, along with increased anxiety and concern. At the same time, these accounts make the realities of cat ownership clearer and more authentic. The Harem has never been merely a collection of adorable daily scenes; it is a place where cats and humans live together, age together, and confront life’s challenges side by side.
It is my sincere wish that this book will help everyone better understand the true nature of the Harem cats and gain a deeper appreciation for those unavoidable, yet profoundly valuable, lessons that both humans and cats must learn throughout their lives.
Author
The Emperor of the Cat World— Huang Ama
My divine name is Huang Ama. I had been wandering around for more than two years.
One day on the road, I was met by my current minions, and was warmly welcomed me to the palace.
I and my harem members are all from Taiwan, China. In 2011, we started to recruit concubines, princes, imperial sons and other harem members, and advocate the concept of our Good Sleep Dynasty—“Adoption Instead of Purchase”.
Authors (Minions) — Zhiming and Tanuki
They are my two minions (Tunaki and Zhiming),as well as my coworkers, serving me and my harem at “Mihua Image”, preparing meals for me, and producing photos, movies, and illustrations of the harem’s life for me. Seemingly, they work on commercials and other video productions, but in fact, they are good at cleaning cat litter, playing with the harem members, and of course, the most common ornaments on their bodies are cat hairs.
