Review

“A deeply moving novel that explores the profound, healing power of art. Her writing is reassuring: even when tackling a weighty subject like end-of-life care, it remains as gentle as water—a kind of ‘comfort blanket’ in literary form.”
— Le Journal de Montréal

Feature

★The final story of Promets-moi un printemps series by Quebec-based Canadian author Mélissa Perron. In this book, Fabiana is forced to confront her family’s long-standing tradition of women keeping painful secrets: her grandmother, mother, and aunts have all swallowed their suffering and locked their pain away in drawers. Determined not to be the third generation to bear this burden of silence.
★The final volume topped LesLibraires’ pre-order chart in its first week on sale and was hailed by book critics as a “gentle surgical intervention that uses meteors to illuminate dark corners.” For her body of work, including this book, the author was awarded the Michel-Franckel Prize in Quebec in recognition of her literary contributions to raising awareness about autism and mental health issues.
★Unlike traditional inspirational narratives, this trilogy weaves together depression, autism, women’s identity, and artistic creation into a tender guide on how to keep blooming even with cracks in one’s life. It has been included on recommended reading lists for “mental health resources for young adults transitioning into adulthood” by multiple libraries in Quebec.

The trilogy consists of:
Book One: Fabiana’s Spring
Book Two: She Is Like a River
Book Three: Perseid Meteor

Description

Three years have passed, and Fabiana now lives with her lover Charles in the duplex by the sea in Saint-Auguste that her mother bequeathed to her. Their relationship is perfect, the location is ideal, and she’s thriving at work. Yet for months, something has been slowly gnawing away at her, as a storm brews on the horizon.

Just then, the hospice where she works admits a new patient: Smart—a brooding, difficult man whose very first encounter with Fabiana sparks immediate tension. At the same time, Aunt Claire, the last surviving member of Fabiana’s family, moves into the ground floor of the duplex. Almost simultaneously, that infamous green box resurfaces once again. For Fabiana, it all comes too fast and too fiercely; the storm is already looming.
In this life, everyone harbors secrets. Some take their secrets to the grave, leaving the burden to those who remain. But if you dare to lift the lid on all the secrets—and all the unspoken truths—there is, fortunately, the Perseid meteor shower to rely on.

Author

Mélissa Perron

A multi-talented creator from Quebec, Canada: novelist, painter, illustrator, podcast host, and public speaker. She has long lived at the foot of the mountains where she was born, embracing the belief that “anything is possible” as her guiding principle in life.

At the age of 38, she was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. This personal experience has inspired her to weave the lived experiences of neurodiversity into her novels and graphic novels, and to address the topic of “women and autism” in her lectures.
