Feature
★Authored by a neuroscientist and seasoned science communicator, this book transforms the brain's complex “symphony” into clear chapters. From Aristotle's ancient definitions to cutting-edge neural discoveries, it takes you on a step-by-step intellectual adventure to understand yourself and the essence of being human.
Description
This seemingly simple idea – perceiving the world with our senses, selecting relevant information, and acting accordingly – is actually extraordinarily complex. However, unraveling it, step by step, is likely the beginning of a path toward self-knowledge.
The first five chapters of this book delve deeply into the five senses defined by Aristotle since antiquity: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, covering their anatomy and general functioning. Equally important but less known due to their recent discovery are the senses of proprioception, spatial perception, time, and quantity.
Thus, the subsequent chapters explain fascinating phenomena such as why we can estimate distance or naturally sense the time. In this way, the entire book provides a captivating explanation – both scientifically rigorous and highly accessible – of how our brain manages to keep us alive every day by utilizing all its senses in an intricate teamwork. This gives us an insight into both the simplicity and the complexity of being human.
