Review
— Reader Su Bingxiang
"The seal in the book never tries to change anything; it just wants to steer its own round and sturdy body well while maintaining a gentle and smooth breath. At the same time, it shows everyone through practical action: you don't need to rely on any decaying driftwood. When you truly relax and learn to rest, you can stand freely amidst the complex waves of human nature and become yourself. The seal doesn't wear skirts because it doesn't need any clothes. The seal doesn't wear makeup because it simply doesn't. The seal, in my imagination, is the pure female in an ideal environment. Because in such an environment, women can simply become themselves. They can do some basic things simply, sometimes appearing a bit rigid, sometimes not. Yes, as long as you are ready, you can become a seal. And everyone can become a different seal, while we still remain ourselves. This is because everyone, no matter who they are, has their own preferred ways to rest and relax. As long as you agree: life is about inserting some work into rest, not inserting some rest into work. May we all be relaxed and at ease, following our own hearts!"

Feature
This book is a continuation and deepening of the author's "Seal Universe" series. On Dangdang, China's largest online book retailer (often referred to as the "Chinese Amazon"), the Seal IP has already built a solid reader base. Readers have called it "the embodiment of healing" and explicitly stated they would "give 100 points to the seal that accompanied me through difficult times," proving its lasting emotional resonance.
★ A Creator with International Vision and Top Magazine Experience.
The author, Wang XX, was awarded the Benetton scholarship for advanced studies in Italy and worked as an illustrator for the famous international Italian magazine COLORS. This experience allows her artistic expression to blend Eastern philosophy with a visual language understandable to a global audience. She has also held a solo exhibition in Lisbon.
★ A Healing Solution Precisely Targeting a Global Social Pain Point!
The core of this book—"rest"—is precisely the world's most scarce resource and most urgent need. Presented as a "rest practice manual," the book uses lighthearted and humorous comics to redefine "rest" as a positive, creative life choice, not as laziness or escape. It responds to the pervasive fatigue prevalent in global youth culture, from "involution" (over-competition) to "Quiet Quitting."
★ An Emotional Expression That Transcends Cultural Differences and Resonates Deeply.
The stories of the seal, little octopus, and little manatee in the book strip away complex cultural backgrounds and point directly to universal human emotions: the longing for easy relationships, the cherishing of simple joys, and the acceptance of one's true self. As one reader insightfully commented, "The seal... is the pure female in an ideal environment... can simply become themselves." This call to "be yourself" has a transboundary appeal.
Description
· Patting your belly is a form of rest. Waiting for a pot of water to boil is a form of rest. Chatting happily about nonsense with friends is a form of rest.
· Having an empty mind feels so joyful.
· We can also like the lazy version of ourselves.
"Taking a Good Rest Is Serious Business" is a brand-new collection of comic stories by the hugely popular cartoonist Ms. Wang XX, a seal's rest practice manual. Rest is the key to the Seal Universe.
The seal lives with Little Octopus and Little Manatee. They love eating, sleeping, and traveling. They sometimes earn a little money, sometimes are quite poor, but never care about worldly rules. "Taking a good rest is serious business" is their life philosophy.
The book is divided into five thematic sections: "What a Seal Ought to Be Like," "Seal, Just That Confident," "Living Is Mainly for Resting," "A Seal's Daily Life," and "A Seal's Philosophy." It also contains a mysterious gatefold page; opening it can transport you into an immersive rest mode in one second.
Hurry into the seal world and boost your "seal value." Now, rest...
Author
Wang XX is a Chinese cartoonist and illustrator working and living in Shanghai. She is better known as a steadfast "seal enthusiast" and the creator of this warm IP.
She graduated in 2011 from the Nanjing University of the Arts, one of China's top art academies. After graduation, she was awarded the Benetton scholarship for her exceptional talent to pursue advanced art studies in Italy. From 2012 to 2014, she worked as a full-time illustrator for the globally influential magazine COLORS in Treviso, Italy, an experience that greatly broadened her international artistic perspective. Subsequently, she lived in London for a time before finally settling in Shanghai in 2015 to begin her career as a full-time creator.
Since drawing the first seal in July 2013, Wang XX has continued to create around this character for over a decade. The core aim of her work is to explore profound themes like self-acceptance, mental health, women's growth, and daily life philosophy through lighthearted and humorous comics. She is deeply influenced by British artist David Shrigley and American cartoonist Allie Brosh, excelling at conveying delicate emotions and philosophical thoughts through simple lines and witty dialogue.
In addition to publishing Chinese bestsellers like I Choose to Rest Well, I Always Feel Something Is Not Bad, and Taking a Good Rest Is Serious Business, her work has also been published in English (Sealf-Care for Everyone). In 2017, she co-founded the brand "YesSealLife" with friends, successfully developing the "seal" from a paper character into a cultural symbol encompassing exhibitions and merchandise. Wang XX defines herself as "someone who can make a living just by doing what she likes," and the seal she draws is the cutest embodiment of this philosophy of living freely.
