On a weekend just before the summer vacation, Dad, who usually loves watching “I’m a Naturalist Too,” announced a big decision to Mom: He had used his savings to buy a used campervan. Mom firmly insisted that with two kids needing to attend tutoring classes and summer science workshops, there was simply no way they could go camping. In the end, Dad proposed that he would take the kids camping and provide them with scientific experiences—but only if they completed the tasks Mom assigned and wrote a “Vivid Science Practice Report.” At first, siblings Han Jialan and Han Jiaying were thrilled at the thought of camping—looking forward to campfires, starry nights, barbecues, and all the other joys of outdoor life. But when they realized they had to complete tasks and write a report, their excitement quickly turned to disappointment, and they reluctantly agreed to go along.

Finally, the day of the camping trip arrived—but instead of heading out alone, the family found themselves with an unexpected guest: a science YouTuber with just 78 subscribers—none other than their uncle! After seeing a social media post from Dad about the family’s camping plans, Uncle decided to join them and film a camping video to upload online. With each family member setting off with different expectations and goals, the question loomed: Would this quirky family be able to reach their destination, complete their tasks, and return home safely?

There’s a clever twist to this campervan: The people actually riding in it have no idea where they’re headed. The family of four climbs into the van, and it drives them toward a destination that Mom has pre-entered into the navigation system. Only when they arrive does an enigmatic, somewhat cryptic task get revealed—a task that seems both familiar and mysterious at the same time. As the family works to solve the task Mom has given them, science proves to be an invaluable tool. Relying on Dad’s self-proclaimed expertise in science back in middle school and on Uncle’s scientific knowledge as a science YouTuber, what initially seemed like an unfamiliar and unappealing cave exploration gradually transforms into a space that sparks curiosity and wonder. Using potato chips to make a fuel additive, they learn about the principles of combustion; marveling at the cave “sculptures” formed over millions of years by dripping water, they experience the beauty and emotional power of the natural world; and by studying cave-dwelling creatures that have evolved to adapt to their unique habitat, they gain a profound appreciation for the wonders of nature.

With Han Jialan’s bold yet sometimes reckless approach, combined with Dad and Uncle’s knack for spotting crucial clues at critical moments, and with the quick-thinking and resourcefulness of Han Jiaying, who always steps in to fill in the gaps left by her brother and father, the family ultimately succeeds in completing the two tasks Mom assigned. However, an unexpected challenge arises just as they are trying to escape the cave: A sudden downpour outside causes the water level inside the cave to rise rapidly. Can they make it out safely?

After the cave camping adventure, Uncle’s cave video helps him gain more subscribers, and the siblings Han Jialan and Han Jiaying also become somewhat famous after being interviewed by a children’s newspaper. During every break, kids gather around them, eager to hear their cave stories, and after class, they dive deeper into learning about caves and the science behind them. Beyond the captivating and immersive stories, each episode concludes with two special features: “Camping Science with a Popular YouTuber” and “Vivid Science Practice Report,” which provide a thorough explanation of the scientific concepts introduced in the story. The series also covers essential safety tips for outdoor activities like camping—tips that are easy to overlook but can make a big difference—and offers practical advice that anyone can benefit from. The appendix, “Caves in Korea,” introduces real caves in Korea that visitors can explore, encouraging readers to extend their reading experience into actual outdoor adventures.

Ko Eun-ji
A children’s literature writer, Ko has been teaching at a primary school since 2010. To bring the knowledge from textbooks to life in children’s everyday experiences, she is dedicated to creating works that are both engaging and rich in substance. She studied the art of writing books for children and young adults at the JY Storytelling Academy. Her published works include “How Did Our Ancestors Protect the Earth?” and “Raid the Convenience Store! The Human Body Edition,” among others.

Cho Seung-yeon
An illustrator. After studying fine arts at university, Cho went on to specialize in illustration at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art et de Design in Nancy, France. She currently works as an illustrator for children’s books. Her illustrated works include “Doctor Avengers” (volumes 1–15), “After-School Superpower Club,” “The Dangerous Seagull,” “Tantan’s Crossroads: The Wansubok Transmission Agency,” and “Running Machines: Flower Cars and Bicycles,” among others.
