Description

This is Ma Boyong’s brand-new historical novel published in 2022.

A great doctor is like a historian: with a healer’s compassion, they witness the turbulence of a grand era.

A young boy from Northeast China who narrowly escapes death in the Russo-Japanese War, a Cantonese lad working as an errand runner in the London Legation, and a wealthy Shanghai girl unwilling to settle for a life of comfort—these three young people, with different backgrounds, personalities, and experiences, cross paths at a critical moment in 1910 when they all step into the China Red Cross General Hospital, beginning their intertwined medical destinies.

As part of China’s first generation of public charity doctors, they carry responsibilities far heavier than those of ordinary physicians. Wherever there is an epidemic, they must go to treat it; wherever disaster strikes, they must rush to provide relief; wherever war breaks out, they must brave the crossfire to save lives. The Shanghai Plague, the Anhui Flood, the Wuchang Uprising—the turbulent landscape of the late Qing Dynasty ceaselessly shapes their fates. Supporting one another, they evolve from three naive and inexperienced youths into exceptional doctors, learning through each rescue effort what it truly means to be a “great doctor”.
