Description

"The Floating Temple" tells the story of Lanruo Monastery, which mysteriously ascends into the sky after the death of its imprisoned master, monk Wugen (Rootless). This surreal phenomenon turns the temple into a divine spectacle in the eyes of the world — yet the monks trapped inside desperately seek a way back to the ground. Through their struggles, the novel reveals a vivid tapestry of monastic life, capturing their varied reactions and choices in the face of the inexplicable.
By exploring the monks’ divergent responses — from fervent devotion to gnawing doubt — the story delves into profound meditations on human nature, desire, Buddhist teachings, and the meaning of existence. The novel has been adapted into the award-winning graphic novel "Cloud Temple" by Zhang Xiaoyu ("Golden Elephant Award" winner at France’s Chambéry International Comics Festival), whose distinctive artistry brings Qitongren’s fantastical vision to life with striking immediacy.

Author

Qitongren (b. 1972), pen name inspired by Kafka’s "The Bucket Rider", is a celebrated Chinese short-story writer and fantasist, regarded as one of contemporary China’s most literary fantasy creators.
