Description
The real heroes were the Soviet polar pilots. In the history of world aviation, they made multiple search flights for the first time in the midst of gale-force winds and temperatures as low as minus forty degrees Celsius, flying planes without enclosed cockpits and navigation equipment. They eventually discovered the ice camp and successfully transported 102 people back to the mainland. The pilots, with their strong will and excellent skills, completed this great rescue mission under extremely harsh conditions.
This book, created by Vladislav Serov, who consulted a large number of historical materials, vividly recreates the heroic deeds in this polar epic in comic form. The book also includes two articles by writer Oleg Bondur, "A Few Words about the 'Chelyuskin'" and "How Heroes Saved Heroes," adding more interesting details about the expedition and its main participants—the rescued and the rescuers. This is not only a thrilling rescue but also a legend of human courage and wisdom.
Author
A talented graphic artist and sculptor. He was born in St. Petersburg and graduated from the St. Petersburg State Lunacharsky Academy of Fine Arts and the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Arts. Since 2011, he has been a member of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists. Serov's artistic journey began in his childhood, inspired by the comic book "The Adventures of Sailor Kashenka," which led him to create his first comic. In adulthood, he wanted to create an exciting and educational work for his children, and thus embarked on the path of comic creation.
In 2017, he presented a report titled "Comics as a Means of Popularizing Naval History" at the Fourth Krusenstern Academic Conference, highlighting the importance of comics in the popularization of history. In the same year, he published an article titled "The Birth of Historical Comics" in the _Military History Journal_. In 2018, he collaborated with the historical shipyard "Poltava" to publish his first comic book, "Hurrah for the 'Poltava'!" which tells the story of a battleship of the Baltic Fleet.
Serov believes that sculpture, painting, and comic creation are all organic components of a unified creative process. His works not only showcase the charm of art but also convey the power of history. Serov himself has this to say about his creation: "One cannot sit on two chairs at the same time, but sometimes interrelated things can combine separate chairs into a bench. In this way, sculpture, modeling, stone and wood carving, welding, painting, and comic creation all become organic components of a unified creative process."
