Description

Have you heard of Vitus Bering? He was the first explorer to cross both the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, and his name is forever etched into the Bering Strait, Bering Sea, Bering Island, and Bering Isthmus. This graphic novel vividly recounts the life of this great explorer, his perilous journeys, and his monumental achievements. It also delves into the nature and culture of Earth’s northernmost regions, along with many other fascinating insights.
Vitus Bering was a Russian naval officer and navigator who led the Northern Expedition to chart Russia’s northern and eastern coasts, explored routes to America and Japan, discovered numerous islands, and documented the local people’s way of life. His voyage aboard the *St. Peter* to the American coast was not only a feat for Russian sailors but also a pivotal chapter in human maritime history. Yet these great discoveries came at a high cost—many crew members, including Bering himself, lost their lives.
Created by St. Petersburg artist and sculptor Vladimir Serov, this book draws on extensive historical research to craft a realistic graphic novel where content and illustrations complement each other perfectly. It not only vividly portrays these grand expeditions but also serves as a valuable supplement to school history and geography textbooks.
The book concludes with an afterword by writer Oleg Bondur, helping readers deeply understand and appreciate the era and the heroes’ deeds. Expressive maps trace the routes of all expeditions, while the back page lists the names of heroes immortalized in Russia’s geographical landmarks.

Author

【Author】Vladislav Andreyevich Serov (1984)
A talented graphic artist and sculptor. He was born in St. Petersburg and graduated from the St. Petersburg State Lunacharsky Academy of Fine Arts and the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial Arts. Since 2011, he has been a member of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists. Serov's artistic journey began in his childhood, inspired by the comic book "The Adventures of Sailor Kashenka," which led him to create his first comic. In adulthood, he wanted to create an exciting and educational work for his children, and thus embarked on the path of comic creation.

In 2017, he presented a report titled "Comics as a Means of Popularizing Naval History" at the Fourth Krusenstern Academic Conference, highlighting the importance of comics in the popularization of history. In the same year, he published an article titled "The Birth of Historical Comics" in the _Military History Journal_. In 2018, he collaborated with the historical shipyard "Poltava" to publish his first comic book, "Hurrah for the 'Poltava'!" which tells the story of a battleship of the Baltic Fleet.

Serov believes that sculpture, painting, and comic creation are all organic components of a unified creative process. His works not only showcase the charm of art but also convey the power of history. Serov himself has this to say about his creation: "One cannot sit on two chairs at the same time, but sometimes interrelated things can combine separate chairs into a bench. In this way, sculpture, modeling, stone and wood carving, welding, painting, and comic creation all become organic components of a unified creative process."
