Review

This book is suitable for science lovers of all ages.

Gabriella Grayson, who is a physicist, famous science popularizer, writer and actor, explained the main "contradictions" between the most important physics theories in history to the readers in very pleasant words. Classical physics describes the phenomena that people pay attention to every day, while quantum mechanics is born to explain microscopic phenomena. The author uses a literary skill that is invaluable and valid for her: fictional conversations with the great men of the distant past. In this book, the author writes conversations with Newton (classical physics) and Richard Feynman (quantum physics).

This is a very enjoyable book that can be read in one sitting.

Description

If you want to understand quantum mechanics, you must be ready for the journey into an endless and beautiful world. That's why this handy guide was born, allowing us to indulge in the darkest windings of quantum mechanics. On the other hand, Bohr said, "If a person is not shocked when he first hears about quantum physics, he understands nothing."

Gabriella Greison, who is a "rock star in physics", wrote a special guide to quantum mechanics, which is a wonderful theory completely contrary to our common sense. Therefore, what better way to explain it than to imagine talking about it with Isaac Newton? Of course, he is a great scientist, but also an absolute example of the "classical" reasoning challenged by this new theory, and we all think about the world around us with such reasoning. I mean, if you can persuade him…

Gabriella Greison explained Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Schrodinger's cat paradox, double-slit experiment and quantum entanglement, wave-particle duality and ultraviolet disaster to Newton and all of us in her clear and accurate style. She showed us how many daily necessities, such as lasers, USB flash drives and barcode readers work through this theory to us. Most importantly, she gives us a taste of this kind of knowledge, and it is so counter-intuitive, incomprehensible and "useless" that it has an irresistible attraction for people who are full of curiosity and do not want to conform!

Author

Gabriella Greison is a physicist, a writer and a professional journalist. After completing a MA degree in Physics at Milan University, she worked at Paris École Polytechnique for two years. She has collaborated with several research institutes and scientific museums and she has contributed to several magazines and dailies. At the moment she is scriptwriter and host of the TV show Pillole di fisica [Physics 101], a weekly show on RaiNews24. Her latest book, The incredible dinner of quantum physicists has been published in 2016. She’s been recently staging her play 1927. Quantum Monologue, where she focuses on the humane side of twentieth-century physics who made history. The play is always highly demanded throughout the country.
She is the author of ten educational books on quantum mechanics, the history of physics, and the great women scientists in history, three topics that are very close to her heart.
