There are approximately two billion dogs in the world. It is the oldest animal species domesticated by and for humans (even before the advent of agriculture, nearly 15,000 years ago!). But this cohabitation has not been without consequences for the evolution of our canine friends.
So how did these Labradors, Chihuahuas, Poodles and German Shepherds, to name a few, gradually differentiate themselves by developing their characteristic skills and personalities? Studies in recent years in comparative psychology now allow us to better understand this world of dogs. All from a common ancestor with the wolf, our faithful companions are much more talented than one might think.
This book is not a practical guide to how to choose the right breed of dog for us, nor to learn how to better train your animal or make it a model of obedience; rather, it reveals the cognitive skills that are specific to dogs and that make their personality nothing more and nothing less.

Francois Y. dore
had a profound influence in his scientific discipline and contributed greatly to the development of the school of psychology at universite Laval.Professor dore joined the university in 1978. During the next 37 years, he created several courses in the fields of learning psychology, animal psychology, neuroscience and evolutionary psychology. He supervised 12 doctoral students and 32 master's students.
His scientific career is distinguished by the numerous grants he obtained and by the role he played in several learned societies. It was his innovative spirit that made him a fellow of the Canadian Psychological society and the renowned American Psychological Association.
Tireless, retirement did not prevent him from publishing in 2015 the origins of human behavior and culture, and Dans la tete des animaux, currently in bookstores, both at editions MultiMondes. These books add to his impressive list of contributions: more than 170 papers, some sixty high-level scientific articles, as well as several books, book chapters and various scientific and educational documents.
Francois dore also had a brilliant administrative career. He truly served his university by holding a number of positions of responsibility, including director of the school of psychology, assistant to the vice rector of human resources, director of the office of faculty and staff affairs, and vice-dean of the faculty of graduate and postdoctoral studies.
He has demonstrated excellence in various aspects of his career. A committed professor, exceptional scientist, and devoted administrator, he left his mark on the memory of the school of psychology and the universite Laval.
