Description

On January 6, 2021, a populist tsunami hit U.S. Capitol Hill. Photos of men in bison hoods occupying the House of Representatives confirm that liberal democracy is at risk. This is the result of an extremely narrow 21st century. Boeing planes crashed into the Twin Towers; Lehman Brothers executives left their offices with boxes; because of the curfew imposed as the pandemic spread. Three crises in a row have stripped us of the confidence to feel safe, prosperous, healthy and progressive.

Liberalism’s weakness in the face of the challenges of this century has left it scarred in the face of populism, while nostalgia for authoritarianism has grown in democracies. In the face of this unfavorable situation for liberty, Jose Maria Lasalle proposes a new critical liberalism that rejects the hybrid neoliberalism of Trump and fascism, represented by the alt-right rising in the Tea Party Selfish individualism under ideology.

Liberalism in the 21st century must be a new collaborative humanism willing to ally with those hospitable and generous democrats against the hatred and polarization spread by the reactionary international. It also defends tech humanitarianism, preventing Silicon Valley’s neoliberal authoritarianism from becoming a “cyber Leviathan” in the West based on the Biggest Data unleashed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
