Description
[Excerpt from “Little Blue Rabbit”]
On the bottom shelf of the shop window sat a little rabbit. It had been there for a long, long time—a whole summer—and all its neighbors had been taken away one by one, with new ones constantly replacing them. They would often appear, only to be quickly chosen by pretty girls and boys. After all, it was the largest shop window in the store! The rabbit kept waiting, but no one came for it.
One evening, when the shop was empty and the toys began their usual chatter, the little rabbit turned to an owl nearby:
“Dear owl, may I ask you a question?”
“I’m listening, my neighbor.”
“Can you tell me why no one has taken me away?”
The owl looked carefully at the little rabbit but said nothing. It was a wise bird.
“I know!” purred the cat softly. “No one will take you because one of your ears is shorter than the other. One is a rabbit’s ear, the other looks like a mouse’s ear.”
“And you’re blue—rabbits aren’t supposed to be blue!” someone added.
“Hahaha!” everyone burst into laughter.
“No one will buy you!” oinked the pig. “Because you’re flawed!”
The toys continued to mock, and the rabbit turned to the wall and cried silently.
