Description

Following the three-domain system common in all fields today, this book features the most representative, well-known and distinctive plants of each species, giving a closer and comprehensive understanding of plants through observation and of the ecological interactions that exist in the plant kingdom. The book also contains anecdotes about plants.
An example: an orchid that confuses male bees.
The bee orchid is a very special orchid that has flowers shaped like a female bee, not only with a head, wings and a belly, but also many short hairs on its body, which can be confused as the real one. What is even more incredible is that it can actually emit female bees’ scent of being ready to mate to confuse the male bees. These are all good camouflage skills of bee orchid. Male bees emerge from their stinging soil at regular time each year in the warm spring when the asleep females usually emerge two weeks later. The trick is that the bee orchid blooms two weeks before the female bees emerge, exploiting the loopholes. As soon as a male bee emerges from the ground, he smells the fascinating scent of the bee orchid. He can’t help to follow the scent and sees the "female bee" waiting for him, pouncing on her. In effect, the male bee helps pollinate the orchid.
