This is a Swiss travel book woven together with illustrations and text.

During her deep travels in Switzerland, the author did not choose a fast-paced check-in route. Instead, she boarded the century-old legendary cruise ship on Lake Lucerne, slowly approaching Mount Rigi, the “Queen of the Mountains,” and Mount Pilatus, mythologized as the “dragon’s habitat.” With delicate brushstrokes, she recorded the seamless integration of Swiss public transportation and natural landscapes—trains, boats, cable cars—every mode of transport is itself part of the journey.

The book covers four classic Swiss destinations: Lake Lucerne, Jungfrau region, Zurich, and Davos-Klosters. It includes both classic landmarks and lesser-known viewpoints; travel tips and transportation guides, as well as personal observations on seasonal choices and local customs. It functions in two ways: as an art book, you can simply enjoy the beauty of the illustrations; as a travel guide, you can take it with you to plan your itinerary.

Chang Dianna, Director of Greater China for Switzerland Tourism, said at the launch: “Beyond the refreshing natural scenery and picturesque cityscapes, we hope travelers can go deeper into local culture, explore those little-known corners, and experience a real and three-dimensional Switzerland.” This book is a product of that philosophy—it is not telling you “where to check in,” but inviting you to “walk slowly, look slowly.”

Ma Yuqing
Born in 1997, Chinese young illustrator living in Europe.
Graduated with a bachelor’s and master‘s degree in Illustration and Comics and Illustration Publishing from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna in Italy. Currently lives and works in Italy as a freelance illustrator.
Her works are mainly in a delicate hand-drawn style and have won international art and publishing awards. She has long provided illustrations for magazines, novels, and children’s picture books at home and abroad.
Representative works include “Four Seasons in Bologna” and “Wandering in Switzerland.” In June 2026, at the official invitation of Switzerland Tourism, she attended book launch events in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.

Before setting off, the names of those famous Swiss cities were to me nothing but scattered, stereotyped impressions and historical fragments: Lucerne made me think of the annual comic festival and competition, Grindelwald was the inspiration for the name of the dark wizard in J.K. Rowling‘s books, Zurich banks are found all over the world, the Davos Forum is an important annual meeting of world leaders... Beyond that, there was no more understanding, let alone imagination. They merely appeared occasionally in news headlines, in others’ stories, or in exquisite but distant photos in travel ads—I had never even truly expected to set foot in these places myself.

Perhaps many things are destined. Thanks to the “Roaming Switzerland” project, I came to Switzerland‘s Lake Lucerne, Jungfrau region, Zurich, and Davos-Klosters for a half-month journey. Following the itinerary, I toured city streets, hiked and rode mountain bikes in open fields. I took various trains to one destination after another, rode cable cars up mountains, took boats, buses, and trams, ate local food, drank water from roadside fountains, listened to local residents tell their experiences and lives, and those legends and stories, true or false.

Along the way, the originally flat and monotonous impressions gradually became three-dimensional and vivid. Switzerland is no longer just perfect landscape photos in promotional videos, but the warmth of spring sunlight on the skin, the fresh smell of lake water and lawns in the air, the faint sound of cowbells and church bells in the wind, the clouds and mist hanging on the mountainside on cloudy days, and the dazzling light reflected by glaciers and snow on sunny days; also the multilingual conversations rising and falling on trains, the rhythmic ding-dong of trams running along tracks on the streets... These experiences during the journey, accompanied by excitement, joy, and shock, occasionally mixed with unease and confusion, together constitute my very personal emotions and cognition of Switzerland.

Ten years ago, when I first went abroad to study, I was still a home-loving child. Independence for me did not seem to be a slow, gradual process, but rather suddenly arriving in a foreign country with huge language and cultural differences, wiping tears and missing my family‘s protection while learning and growing through one challenge after another. Under such experiences, I deeply understand the preciousness of curiosity and courage. Isn’t travel the same? Curiosity allows us to abandon stereotypes and narrow prejudices, respect differences, and experience everything in the world like a child. Courage allows us to step out the door, face the unknown and uncertainty, and in constant exploration, truly appreciate the vastness of heaven and earth.

In my previous book “Four Seasons in Bologna,” I recorded my years of living in Bologna, Italy, more like a look back and introduction to a familiar world. In “Roaming Switzerland,” I will lead readers into a brand-new world, stepping onto a journey of exploration with me. I hope that through the stories in the book, I can share the vivid memories and insights from the journey with every reader, so that before setting off, you can both eliminate inner worries and be fully prepared, thus more calmly and confidently setting out with curiosity.

The world is big, heaven and earth are vast, there are too many new things to take in, too many to see all.
But the world is also small. In every corner, you may encounter goodwill and warmth that cross language and culture.
