Review

"… a sublime novel, not only about ‘love and lies’ but also about decline and death."
——NRC Handelsblad

"This is not a prickly tale about being ‘the other man.’ … Everything for the Trip is a story about the existence of different versions, about never being able to know each other completely. About how that might not matter."
——De Volkskrant

"I don’t think it would have been possible to write a text that feels so pure, almost playful, any other way."
——De Volkskrant

"Van Dis creates a monument to a love that consisted outside the confines of the ordinary."
——De Groene Amsterdammer

Description

A terminally ill woman chooses a hospice because there she can also receive her lover. In a fold-out bed. With morphine patches and a forbidden glass of wine from a teacup. In the weeks that remain, she asks him to take her on a journey. ‘I want to get away from here!’ The couple take flight in their imagination, experience wonderful literary journeys and find support in writers and poets. But they also explore each other. Their differences, similarities, the lies, flirtations, betrayals, and wounds that shaped them. Everything for the Trip is a moving novel about a great love.
