Sandrine Andres
She was born in a small village in the Deux-Sèvres department, a place with a very charming name: Mauzé-sur-le-Mignon. From an early age, she loved modeling clay and drawing, often spending hours on end creating on the oilcloth tablecloth in her kitchen. After passing her baccalauréat, she went to Paris to study at the Louvre School. A few years later, she would defend her doctoral thesis on contemporary drawing. During that time, she lived in New York for a year and worked at the renowned Sonnabend Gallery. There, she became acquainted with the Statue of Liberty, though, being afraid of heights, she never ventured up the spiral staircase hidden beneath the statue’s robe! Upon returning home, she began writing for magazines dedicated to art news—Cimaise until 2009, as well as Art actuel—before moving into the field of youth publishing. She served as a regular editor for DADA, a monthly magazine introducing children to art, and has also worked as a curator, art critic, novelist, author of art books, and series editor.
Her favorite works of art: those that are playful and enveloping, such as Yayoi Kusama’s immersive installations or Jean Dubuffet’s Villa Falbalà.
Her favorite museum: The Museum of Modern Art in New York, because every weekend she had to accompany Michael Sonnabend there—he simply couldn’t get enough; it felt like “babysitting Grandpa”...
